Your First Visit
Expect your first appointment to take around 45 minutes during which you'll meet with the doctor to go over your health history to have any questions answered and to undergo a thorough examination. During this time, your reflexes may be tested, your ability to turn and bend and other standard orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic tests will be conducted. If necessary, x-ray views of your spine may be taken.
The doctor will study the results and explain what they mean, including anything of note in your x-rays. This information will allow the doctor to recommend a care program designed for your unique health situation. At this point, you are also ready for a chiropractic spinal adjustment, which helps restore proper spinal and nervous system function, promoting the healing process. Continued visits help retain the supporting muscles and ligaments as well as periodic examinations to monitor your progress.
Why is an Adjustment Needed?
Joints that are not moving properly can cause compression on spinal nerves, resulting in various health symptoms throughout the body. Adjustments are needed to restore proper function to the joints, helping your bones to gradually return to a more normal motion and position.
What to Expect After Your Adjustment
What you experience may be different from the next person - sometimes a feeling of peace and relaxation, perhaps a better night's sleep or increased energy. Some patients report that their symptoms may go away after the first adjustment while others don't feel any immediate difference. Don't be discouraged, as often you are unaware of internal improvements.
Occasionally, you may feel discomfort ranging from headache to general fatigue. In almost every case, these feelings go away within the next few adjustments. Many times, this is due to a detoxification of the body after adjustments when poisons leave the system.
